Like most cities, Glasgow boasts an impressive, competitive and assorted high street, with countless clothes shops decorating the famous Argyll Street. Top Shop, River Island, H&M, Zara…girls (and boys) are undoubtedly spoilt for choice. Or are they?

Glasgow may have an abundance of clothing outlets offering the very latest and greatest in fashion, but just how diverse are the options? Colours and styles vary from one store to another, but it seems that the high street lacks individuality, leaving us shopping in different stores but essentially wearing the same outfits. It therefore comes as no surprise that 2011 looks set to be the year that Glasgow shoppers snub trendy for vintage, with an overwhelming interest being generated in the city’s hidden treasure troves of second hand clothes shops.

Candlerigg’s The City (Retro Fashion) is a hub of vintage treasure, with friendly and enthusiastic sales staff making this a must-visit. The glamour of the 70s, the retro of the 80s, or the nostalgia of the 90s can be indulged in here, and at very affordable prices. What The City lacks in space, it compensates for in quantity of clothes – you’ll have to set aside a few hours just to get through all the racks.

A stone’s throw away from The City is another gem – Mr Ben Retro Clothing is one of a little group of stores in the Saltmarket area, boasting a range of clothing from eras gone by. Whether it’s a Twiggy-era mini-dress or the military-style replicated by The Libertines you’re looking for, Mr Ben has it. Whole afternoons can be lost browsing in this slice of second-hand heaven.

Even brides-to-be aren’t immune to antique retail. Dragonfly Dress Design on Argyle Street offers blushing brides the opportunity to look unique on their special day. This boutique will make a dress from scratch if required, and customise it to suit the client.

Glasgow tiring of high street replica offers shoppers the opportunity to experiment with fashion from the past, present, and in some cases, future.

The City Retro Fashion is at 41 King Street. Further up the road, at no 101 is Mr Ben Retro Clothing, while Dragonfly Dress Design is at 19 Argyle Court, 1103 Argyle Street.
