Certain factions of the hip hop world are currently under siege to a wave of Guetta-esque cheesy synth chords. Thankfully, while NYC rapper River Nelson’s new EP sounds a good deal poppier than his debut album, The Rise and Fall of River Nelson, it doesn’t fall prey to the addition of electronic doodlings from British producer Bias. Instead, Bias has perked up Nelson’s sound and prepared it for a wider audience, particularly on the UK grime-influenced title track. The contemplative lyrics are still there, such as on ‘Strange Things’ (Recently I dreamt that the ocean was ice/And I just skated off right into the night/But I guess I’m just strange) but this time you’re going to want to move your feet while you follow the words.

While We’re Young is out now on Canteen Records.
