Leeds boys, the China Rats only formed one year ago and released their first EP 2 months ago.

Yet they have managed, by fluke, to headline one of the main stages at Benicassim after Bat for Lashes was late.

Following this stroke of luck, they have had much major radio play and are being applauded for their nod to the nineties vocal styling and simplistic songcraft.

The energy is impressive as they play to a half full Tuts tonight, yet as much as simplicity is good, there is also a need for something more. Some tracks sound like Green Day 20 years ago if they had never listened to the Buzzcocks. Highlight of the set is single “To Be Like I” with 50s drumming and a hooky chorus.

If the band continue to develop down this route, they could certainly live up to the hype.
