Album Of 2012 Given To The Wild, The Maccabes

The Maccabees’ ‘Given To The Wild’ has to be my album of 2012. I’ve always been a big fan of The Maccabees, and as soon as I heard ‘Given To The Wild’ it was evident that the band had taken a really big step up. ‘Given To The Wild’ is dreamy, sparse, warm, and confident. I became pretty obsessed with this album and listened to it religiously for a good few months. I managed to catch the band live at the start of the year and their translation of the album in a live setting just made it all the more special for me. The news that the band will be producing their own album which they are starting in early 2013 was music to my ears, I cannot wait to hear what they come up with when they are 100% in control of their own music and production. Exciting stuff!

Song Of 2012 Fuck Up The Fun, Azealia Banks

Azealia Banks is my artist of 2012; just what I was waiting for, a fresh, confident, fearless chick who takes no prisoners. As soon as I heard  her single ‘212’ in late 2011, I just had to have more. Various tracks were released online, then the ‘Fantasea’ mixtape was released – a full album of songs, for free! There are so many amazing tracks on there to choose from, but I really love the Diplo-produced “Fuck Up The Fun” It’s got a brilliant military-style drum beat, and Azealia’s lines are just brilliant, funny and fierce. What a tune!

Style Icon Of 2012 Drew Barrymore

Now, I would never claim to be fashionable, but my style icon of 2012 would have to be Drew Barrymore;  a woman I always have and always will admire the style of. She rocks casual just as well and as comfortably as she rocks timeless glamour. She’s got a beautiful body and a beautiful face and it’s evident to see she likes to try out many different styles. She doesn’t seem afraid to try new things, sometimes following fashion, sometimes making her own way, always looking confident and comfortable in her choices.

Gig Of 2012 The Maccabees, Edinburgh Picture House

The aforementioned The Maccabees gig at Edinburgh Picture House was my gig of 2012. After becoming completely submerged in their new album more than I ever had before with one of their albums, it was a real treat to see the band perform it live, interspersed with some of their most-loved songs. I was so impressed at just how much the band make the songs come to life when played live.

Festival Moment Of 2012 The Rapture, Rockness

A personal festival moment for me was finally managing to catch The Rapture live at Rockness 2012. I’ve always been a fan of the band and for one reason or another, never quite managed to see them live, so I was excited to see them on the bill for Rockness. Sometimes this kind of anticipation can result in a let down, but The Rapture were most certainly not. They encapsulated the sounds of their records perfectly and I really loved seeing them live.

Scandal Of 2012 Chris Brown

Chris Brown. End of story.

Highlight Of 2012 Azealia Banks

Overall, my musical highlight of 2012 has been Azealia Banks. I’ve loved pretty much everything she’s put out and each release of hers leaves me wanting the next release.
