Kodaline are fast-becoming one of the most important emerging bands of the last year with a brand new EP and debut album in the pipeline for 2013.

I spoke exclusively to guitarist, Mark Prendergast, fresh from the band’s UK and US tour dates about inspiration, the importance of social networking and the pressure of living up to Ireland’s reputation . . .

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard it?

It’s quite hard for us to describe our sound because we’re so in the middle of it. It varies; there are some songs on our album that are led by acoustic guitar, some by piano, and one by mandolin. We tend to give the song what it needs and just have fun with it.

What inspires you?

Everything really, sometimes other music inspires us, both old and new. Sometimes something as simple as going to a new country, or meeting new people can inspire a song.

How do you feel about the reaction to you as a band and your debut EP?

The reaction to our EP has been pretty overwhelming. We’ve been given the chance to visit places we’ve never been before and people are coming to the shows. Quite a bizarre feeling, really.

Ireland has produced some highly successful artists over the years, do you feel pressure to maintain the standard?

Yes, I guess we do. There’s always pressure when we put a new song online or play a show. People tend to compare you to what else is around at the same time. We ignore that and do our own thing.

13 million hits on Google? Impressive! How important has the internet and social networking been in establishing yourself as a band?

Social networking is great for us. We can talk directly to fans. When we come offstage, we can see what people thought of the gig. We can upload videos and photos of us on the road. I think it’s almost essential these days.

What can we expect from your forthcoming debut album?

Our album is basically our favourite songs that we’ve written in the last 2 years. We’re really proud of it; 11 songs in total. There’s a few different sounds on the album that may surprise people who have listened to us before, but we love it.

“The High Hopes EP” is available on 17th March 2013 followed by Kodaline’s debut album, “In A Perfect World” on 1st April 2013.
