The SSE Hydro celebrated its first birthday last week; since opening its doors in September 2013, the venue has become one of the most exciting in Glasgow, playing host to some of the BIGGEST names in music. We say, “Happy Birthday, Hydro” by looking back at the biggest and best who have rocked Glasgow these past 12 months!

Beyonce

Mrs Jay Z brought her world tour to Scotland for the very first time when she played The SSE Hydro for two nights in February as part of her, “Mrs Carter World Tour”. It followed a debut stint at T In The Park in 2011.

Eagles

Veteran rock band, Eagles played The SSE Hydro back in May of this year. The LA band who formed in 1971 played the best of their extensive back catalogue as part of their “The History Of The Eagles” tour.

Katy Perry

Californian girl, Katy Perry brought her “Prismatic World Tour” to Glasgow’s Hydro in May of this year; the singer had to add a second date due to phenomenal demand. The tour was in support of her third studio album, “Prism”, released in October 2013.

The Proclaimers

Scots twins, Craig and Charlie Reid were the first act booked to play The SSE Hydro last October, before Rod Stewart swept in and beat them to the punch! The Proclaimers celebrated 25 years in the music business with a date at Glasgow’s then-newest gig venue with very special guests Roddy Hart & The Lonesome Fire and Glasvegas.

Miley Cyrus

Madcap Miley came to Glasgow in May as part of her “Bangerz World Tour” back in May 2014. The twerking wild-child was touring in support of her fourth studio album, “Bangerz” and played to a sold out crowd.

Simple Minds

Scottish rock band, Simple Minds played a sold-out show in November 2013 at The Hydro, in celebration of more than 35 years as a band. Jim Kerr and Co are scheduled to release their 16th studio album, “Big Music” next month.

Dolly Parton 

The original blonde bombshell brought her “Blue Smoke World Tour” to Glasgow in June, just a week shy of her Glastonbury super-stint. Dolly Parton played her biggest hits, including, “Jolene” and “9 To 5” to a packed house.

Fleetwood Mac

The SSE Hydro played host to legendary band, Fleetwood Mac in October 2013, just weeks after opening its doors. The band were out on the road for the first time since 2009 to mark the 35th Anniversary of 1977 album, “Rumours”.

Prince

The Purple One paid a visit to The Hydro in May for his first headline Glasgow gig in 19 years. It was his first UK arena tour since 1995 and support came from 3RDEYEGIRL.

Justin Timberlake 

Pop superstar, J.T played at The SSE Hydro in April of this year, as part of “The 20/20 Experience World Tour”. The tour came in support of his long-awaited comeback album, “The 20/20 Experience”, which has sold over 3.5 million copies worldwide.

It has been a promising start for the Glasgow venue and it look set to get bigger and better with the likes of Paolo Nutini, Kasabian, The Script and Culture Club all booked to perform at The Hydro in the coming months. Here’s to 2015!
