Ahead of their EP launch this weekend in Glasgow, we caught up with The Dead Settlers frontman, Richard Freed to chat influences, EP expectations and future plans . . .

Who are The Dead Settlers?

The Dead Settlers are a 4-piece indie rock band from the southside of Glasgow who formed in 2013.

How did the band initially come together?

I had been writing songs for years, and put an advert on Gumtree looking for a bassist and drummer to start a band. Scott, our bassist, replied asking if I’d like to try out for his band who were looking for a new singer. Their style and influences were exactly the same as mine, and the rest is history!

Describe your sound in 3 words . . .

Catchy, edgy and fun.

Who or what influences you to make music?

It’s hard to pinpoint exactly. I’d say personally my biggest influences are classic British rock bands such as The Beatles and Led Zeppelin, 90s britpop acts like Oasis, Blur, Radiohead and Supergrass, as well as more contemporary rock acts like Franz Ferdinand, The Fratellis, Coldplay, Arctic Monkeys and Kasabian.

What was your aim when recording your new EP?

Our aim was to showcase a few of our songs and get our sound out there. We want it to promote our band and help continue to expand our fanbase.

Do you feel you achieved this?

We are very happy with the quality of the recordings, and the reaction to the EP so far has been extremely positive. We’re excited to see what happens next!

What does the rest of 2016 have in-store for you?

We’re hosting our EP launch night at Audio in Glasgow on Friday (18th November 2016). We have two very talented Glasgow indie bands, The Rain Experiment and The Hazy Shades supporting us so it should be a really great night. After that we’re going back into the studio at the beginning of December to record our next single, “The Sun” which will be available in early 2017. We also have a couple of live radio sessions in December to promote the EP, so a pretty busy month. We’ve got some exciting news for January that we can’t announce just yet, unfortunately but it’ll be another significant milestone in the band’s journey that we’re all really excited about!
