Merry Christmas, You Hippie, Obscuro, Garage-Punk Lovin' FREAKS!

It's that time of year again... and I'm sure there are plenty of moms and pops and friends who have no idea what to get their vintage loving music geeks. For these types, who love such random and old things, how the hell is anyone supposed to figure out what they don't have already? Well, here are my top ten recommendations, which in reality are what I WISH I was getting for Christmas. I guess I will probably have to settle for that ugly sweater you got me though.

1. TELSTAR- British movie recently released about music producer Joe Meek. I haven't even seen it yet, and I geek out on that stuff. The problem is, I don't think it has been released in the US yet, so a universal DVD player would be needed.

2. SHINDIG- Magazine subscription of all things freaky, psychedelic and mind-blowing! A music lover's wet dream that keeps giving all year long!

3. GOLDMINE PRICE GUIDE TO 45 RPM RECORDS- If they really have it all, at least now they can know what it is all worth!

4. "CAN YOU DIG IT?" LP- This little beauty of a compilation, released on Soul Jazz, has all the best hits of Black action movie soundtracks from 1968 to 1975. Cleopatra Jones and Blacula get yo' Christmas thang groovin'! Available on CD too, if so desired.

5. THE MERRY GO ROUND LP- Reissued by Sundazed (who do it so right, so often)!

6. MATHMOS SPACE PROJECTOR- Whether your music geek is a DJ or not, a crazy spaced out light show can set the mood anywhere! Don't forget to order the oil wheels... this would be so much easier than the overhead projector/ food coloring mixture I am trying to work with....

7. 30TH CENTURY MAN- Scott Walker documentary, that could easily be loved by everyone. The man is a God, and his ability to shape-shift with the times is inspiring.

8. LET'S SPEND THE NIGHT TOGETHER: BACKSTAGE SECRETS OF ROCK MUSES AND SUPER GROUPIES- Pamela Des Barres, groupie queen #1, writes another charming book that reads like a gossip mag for sixties geeks.

9. "WHERE THE ACTION IS!" LOS ANGELES NUGGETS- Any Nuggets boxset is always a good choice, but this one is new and offers groups as popular as the Doors and Standells to rarer singles by Sons of Adam of Kim Fowley. Grab it up!

10. TECHNICS- Let's be honest, even if your loved one has turntables they could always use a back-up. And those who love give nothing but the best.

So, what are you getting me?
