Jackson 5, Billy Ocean, classical music, Balearic house, an aimless live set, and barbecued meat. Not Gutter’s hallucinogen-inspired Xmas wish list, but rather the notable events of last Friday’s Extravaganza at Corsica Studios.

Prins Thomas bi-monthly night has previously featured illustrious guests such as Prosumer, Chateau Flight and Lindstrom; the fifth event included Parisian DJ and radio host Ivan Smagghe and Canadian producer The Mole.

Thomas kicked off proceedings with warm disco grooves, making way for The Mole to take over at 1am. The disjointed, choppy start to his live set made some think he was having technical issues, while others got bored and left the room. Twenty minutes later the sardine can that was the smoking area beckoned.

After three cigarettes and being approached by someone wanting to discuss whether Elephant & Castle is being overrun by luxury apartments, The Mole was still struggling. Whilst he had plenty of decent records up his sleeve, he couldn’t seem to avoid spoiling every single one of them with shoddy beatmatching.

The Prins returned at 2am, to launch into an unexpectedly Balearic-sounding set. Next door Ivan Smagghe was playing techno to a packed room – where everyone had migrated to in the last hour, and were happily bouncing in front of the DJ.

Back in room 1 it wasn’t too long before Thomas was delving deep into his box of treasures again, which included a reggae version of Jackson 5’s ‘I want You Back’, and Billy Ocean’s ‘Nights (Feel Like Getting Down)’.

There was even time for a classical record, something we've witnessed him do before when he brought the dancefloor to a standstill by throwing on Debussy’s Claire de Lune. This is what makes Thomas a great DJ - aside from his technical ability and choice of records, not to mention his remixing skills - he really doesn’t care about being cool. Which, in our opinion, makes him very cool indeed.
