2012: That Was The Year That Was . . . #1

So much has happened in the past 12 months in the way of music, fashion and culture, that it’s hard to pinpoint the biggest things of the year. These are the five things that have had the biggest impact on my life in 2012 . . .

Festival Washout

This year I headed to five different festivals, all between June and July, and only one remained dry. Luckily, Chazzstock was an indoor festival but Isle Of Wight made the headlines for all the wrong reasons as people were left to sleep in cars, wade through knee-high mud and contend with ridiculously high winds. And, at T In The Park, the Slam Tent had to be shut on the Saturday as it started to sink into the mud. Our washout British Summer had a big effect on our festivals, but fortunately the music more than made up for it!

Four More Years!

In October the American people, with the help of musical supporters such as Jay-Z and Bruce Springsteen, helped pick the right guy to run the ol’ US of A. As much as this might not affect us Gutter UK folk on a day-to-day basis, the ramifications of having that nutter Mitt Romney in charge would been felt across the globe.

Fab At 50

Usually one to protest I was born in the wrong decade, it came as a delight to learn that two of the greatest musical groups would be turning 50 in 2012. It’s hard to believe that Beatlemania started half a century ago, and that the Beatles’ musical influence is still prevalent in the charts today. And, on top of that, Rock N Roll giants, The Rolling Stones announced some anniversary concerts to mark their 50 years in the music industry. OK, the ridiculous price tag on the tickets may have been a bit OTT, but there’s no denying that it’s pretty impressive that those gents can still get up and rock their socks off FIVE DECADES later.

Tragic Loss Of A Diva

Back in February, in the height of the US awards season, the tragic news filtered through the press, twittersphere and world: Whitney Houston had been found dead in her hotel room in Los Angeles. Her death coincided with the Grammy’s and the star was reportedly due to attend. Unfortunately, the troubled diva’s life of excess had caught up with her, as she accidentally drowned due to substance misuse. A true talent, her beauty, voice and presence is gone, but definitely not forgotten.

2012: Year Of Sport

I think the thing that had most of us gripped in the UK this year was the Summer Olympic Games. Team GB did well, and although couldn’t compete with the USA or China, the Olympic and Paralympic games produced sporting heroes the nation is undoubtedly proud of. Though not content with hosting the games and collecting a host of medals, the Tour de France also went to Brtiain’s Sports Personality Of The Year, Bradley Wiggins, and his Sky team.  On top of that Andy Murray finally seemed to have found his game, winning an Olympic Gold, reaching the final of Wimbledon and winning the US Open. Lets hope the legacy lasts!

Etre Autumn/Winter Collection 2012

Drawing inspiration from traditional British workwear, Etre present their collection for Autumn/Winter 2012.

Clothing that is crafted with care in the British Isles and includes traditional fisherman’s sweaters complete with customised motifs recognisable to fishing communities.

Ethically sourced materials are used in the manufacture of this clothing; workwear jackets are fabricated from 100% Melten wool produced by a 150 year old family business in West Yorkshire, leather gloves are made by a family business established in 1944 and handbags are manufactured by a small Cornish company.

Etra have taken traditional clothing and made them a modern-day necessity for surviving Britain’s cruel, cold Winters.
