Record Store Day 2012

Yesterday brought Record Store Day; a day when people across the globe celebrate the joy of music by redisovering vinyl.

Glasgow’s Nice ‘N’ Sleazy’s in Sauchiehall Street celebrated Record Store Day 2012 with live music and exclusive deals on limited vinyl collections

“It helps to raise awareness that record shops still exist,” said Alan Swan of insularis records who supplied Sleazy’s with vinyl for the event as he sells another copy of “Doctor Who Special Effects” on vinyl, “It’s about getting people back into the habit of buying music.” Glasgow once boasted over 500 music stores but as technology moves on people are finding easier and cheaper ways of owning music. Record Store Day is all about vinyl, a dying art that is enjoying a ressurrection, “It’s very had to sell CD’s these days,” added Swan, “but people are happy about buying vinyl, it just seems to be the format that people want to have music on these days.”

Vinyl is certainly popular today and Nice ‘N’ Sleazy’s saw Arctic Monkey’s and Flaming Lips LPs fly off their shelves during yesterday’s event.

Much-loved gig venue Nice ‘N’ Sleazy’s welcomed live performances from home-grown talent to celebrate this music-love friendly event including a live set from Call My Name.

Inverness born, Call My Name voiced their support, “For us, Record Store Day is a way of celebrating music by buying vinyl and supporting independent records stores across Scotland…where everyone goes and you see queues lined up outside records shops with everyone trying to get their hands on limited vinyl and tapes, can’t forget tapes!”

As Record Store Day 2012 came to a close, music fans all over the world had celebrated by supporting their favourite artists and their favourite independent record stores cementing the idea that in the age of downloading and iPods, vinyl is still very important to a lot of people.

Charm City Fashion Week Day 1!

Thus begins one of our FAVORITE events on the calendar! The Charm City Fashion Show (full disclosure, I’ll be premiering my Grift line at the show, so please come out and support!), has ballooned into one huge fashion event including most of the city’s boutiques and some pretty dope Djs. We’ll be covering the participants all this week on Gutter. :)

This year, the Baltimore Fashion Alliance and Gutter are sponsoring the PRE party at Mother’s Grill (across the street from the 8×10 where the show will be held) which can only be accessed by your ticket.

Black Magic Warlocks…

One of the city’s BEST new bands is Dee and Warlocks. We had the chance to catch up with the yung’uns awhile back before their Bell Foundry show. The interview is HERE.
Whelp, they’ve grown up! We HIGHLY recommend that you check out their album release party tnght at Golden West. We’re SO convinced that you’re going to like this show that it’s the only event we’re writing about today.
They’re teaming up with Baklavaa (who are also releasing an album), Big Mouth, and Human Host (another Gutter Fav!).
Don’t miss this. :)

In April, Transcend , the Annual Benefit Fashion Show, and Milquetoast, an Experimental Fashion
Event, will give MICA students the ability to showcase their abilities to create inventive clothing that inspires thought
and action. These two distinct shows—both featuring original, purposeful designs—aim to usher in a new view of
fashion and offer a fresh perspective on design, proving once again that Baltimore is a center of fashion and design
innovation.

MICA (the Maryland Institute College of Art btw..) has one of the strongest fashion/textiles departments in the country. Each April, the kidz get to show off a bit. We’re looking forward to this year’s crop of yung ‘uns. Here’s a sample.

Design by Jacqueline Wadowsky for Milquetoast (Photo by Anna Friemoth). Wadowsky’s work is inspired by stories of obsessed explorers and the objects of their quest. Her theatrical costumes attempt to capture these mythic relationships.
