Holly Miller hosts Red Maple this Saturday
The Plea “Oh Ah Yay”
Irish outfit The Plea have been causing quite a stir lately, and rightly so!

The band, originally from Ballyliffen, Ireland release their brand new single, “Oh Ay Yay” tomorrow (Monday 23rd April) a solid, confident effort that bears more than a hint of U2 grandeur and ambition with a little updating courtesy of electronics.
Brothers Denny and Dermot Doherty are at the heart of The Plea and began their career in humble surroundings playing T Rex and The Doors covers in London after relocating from Ireland before heading Stateside to Boston where they worked as labourers by day before setting the city’s Irish pubs and bars alight with their musical talents.
The brothers recruited drummer Gerry Strawbridge and bassist Paul Toland to complete the band in 2009 despite having lost more than a little faith in the music industry when a record deal had eluded them, however, good use of MySpace where the band began posting videos of their tracks paid off and Belgian dance label R&S signed them as their first ever rock signing.
The Plea draw inspiration from their many influences and have already received favourable endorsements from music magazines and websites.
“Oh Ay Yay” showcases what the band have to offer in terms of raw talent, ambition and quiet confidence and precedes their debut album expected for release in May 2012.
Cabin in the Fucking Awesome
I’m going to start this review with some well earned hyperbole. Creators Joss Weadon (Buffy, Firefly, the Avengers) and Drew Goddard (Lost, Cloverfield) have redefined the horror genre with this completely surprising thrill-ride.
It’s almost impossible to write a review of The Cabin in the Woods, a Lament Configuration of a film, without dropping some MASSIVE spoilers.
But I ain’t gonna do it. I’m not that kind of reviewer. I want you to go into this film semi-cold and come out thankful that you only knew half the story going in.
It’s going to be that much sweeter. Trust me.
Although, as I saw at the screening. This is a polarizing film. You will love it or hate it. No in-between. If you sit back and enjoy the ride, you will love it.
I’ll do what I can without giving away too much. Trust me. You’ll hate me for it.
A group of cliches, Jock (Chris Helmsworth AKA Thor), Virgin (Kristen Connelly), Bookworm (Jesse Williams), ummmm Slutty girl (Anna Hutchinson) and Stoner (Fran Krantz with the BEST bong EVER. No. Really. That shit needs to be made now..) pile into an RV to spend the weekend at Jock’s cousin’s cabin. In the cough….EVIL DEAD…cough…woods.
None of them know, as seen in the trailers, that they are being held captive for some sinister reason by men in bad ties.
And that’s all I’m saying.
Weadon and Goddard have completely turned the horror genre on it’s head in Cabin. In fact, I’m going to venture to say you’ve seen the end of horror films as we know it. Every film from Hellraiser to It to the Others and pretty much every horror film in between gets a nod. Nothing will ever be the same for slasher films after Cabin. I found myself (as my annoyed guest can attest) saying “What the fuck is going on?!” about 15 times during the two hour film. By the time the awesome cameo pops up towards the end, you will have no clue what the fuck is coming next. On that note, you’ll have to see this twice just to get all the references.
Cabin never takes it self seriously and is a welcome addition to the self referential genre of horror that goes all the way back to April Fools Day in the 80s and the first Scream film of the 90s.
It’s extremely well made, the creatures (ooop sorry!) look amazing and humor makes an apprearance in all the right places.
Love or hate Cabin in the Woods, you will be talking about it for a long time. Unless the world ends first..wait. Did just write that???

10 Years Later, Red Maple still the best club in Baltimore.
The Annual Spring Fling goes down this Saturday, April 14th.
In 2001, a new venue opened at 930 N. Charles St. that would forever change the ambiance of Baltimore's cultural district. There were already more than a few destinations in the Mt. Vernon neighborhood -- The 13th Floor, Club Hippo, the then-thriving "Kobe" after-hours, however it was an ambitious commitment to DJ/Producer artistry that would define Red Maple's success throughout the next decade.

Within the first week of opening its doors word had quickly spread about the sultry interior design, housing multiple fireplaces and even a garden terrace. The low-key front exterior played an integral part in developing a niche clientle of those who were 'in the know' about music. The owners did not model themselves after some previous success story, but rather set an entirely new standard in Baltimore.
There are many DJs who have helped make Red Maple the staple it is today, from early pioneers such as Kerem Ulken, Chris Brooks, Cool DJ Willie, & Jay Gray, to the modern day hit makers like Brandon Riggs & Patrick Turner, Cullen Stalin, and ForQuarters Collective. There is a rare quality found within many of the artists who have been associated with the venue: A willingness to make personal sacrifice for the greater good of the nightclub.
Another essential element of this case study in Charm City nightlife is the delicious kitchen at Red Maple, thanks to Chef Colin Innes. His small plates are far superior to other so-called "tapas restaurants" in Baltimore, which have almost certainly not paid a visit to the Iberian Peninsula (much less San Sebastian - Spain's Holy Grail of Tapas.) We highly recommend nearly all of the dishes on this excellent seasonal menu - a few favorites being the Filet w/ Gorgonzola & Balsamic reduction, Pumpkin Dumplings, Asparagus Tempura, and the heavenly Risotto Cakes.
Just recently, Red Maple was dubbed "The Best Venue in Baltimore" by Navid Zaharie, boss of Washington DC's 'Stranger than Paradise' crew - the promoter group largely responsible for making DC the internationally respected music destination that it has become in recent years. Coming from someone who is essentially one of the top tastemakers in dance parties nationwide, that statement holds serious weight. The recent Cocoon Workshop production in association with Deep Secrets was easily one of the best events in recent years. It's only fitting that his long-time partner Rosario would serve as the official guest DJ for this Saturday's annual Spring Fling event, celebrating 10 Years of deep grooves at Red Maple.
Join in the festivities at 9pm - 930 N. Charles St. in Baltimore. Dinner & Dancing until 2AM.
