If you don’t like the sound of Swedish dance music and perfectly symmetrical hands-in-the-air moments, look away now.  If on the other hand, you’re not averse to the odd radio-friendly piano break, meet 21-year-old DJ and producer Avicii, aka Tim Bergling, who’s mixed the most recent Strictly Rhythm compilation, 2011’s Strictly Miami.

Avicii’s CV already boasts commercial success with ‘Bromance’ (as well as its inevitable vocal sequel, ‘Seek Bromance’), an award for Best Breakthrough Artist at Miami’s IDMAs earlier this year and a stab at remixing that perennial favourite, ‘Sweet Dreams’, this time with added vocoder. Strictly Miami is his first mix CD, where he pulls out tracks by Dennis Ferrer, Bob Sinclar and Armand Van Helden from the label’s back catalogue.

How would you describe the mix?

I would say it’s a mixture between mine and Strictly’s sound, and a mixture between new and old vibes.

Did you listen to dance music from a young age?

No! I used to listen to most different genres before I got into dance music, but once I heard my first couple of house tracks I was hooked.

How did you first become involved with electronic music?

I heard about this program with which you could create music without playing any instruments from a friend of mine, so I downloaded the demo to try and do a remix of an old video game track [Commodore 64 game ‘Lazy Jones’]. I have been producing almost every day since then.

Do you see yourself primarily as a producer or a DJ?

Well I started out as a producer but I’m almost spending as much time DJing as I do producing nowadays. I love both equally so it’s really hard for me to label myself as either.

Are there any particular DJs/musicians that inspire you?

There are loads. I would say the Swedes: Swedish House Mafia and Eric Prydz amongst others are the ones who really inspired me to get into this industry from day one.

What has been the biggest challenge of your career so far?

The biggest challenge for me has been keeping up with the pace since things have moved so quickly. It’s hard growing up basically overnight.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?

Hopefully, I’ll be doing what I’m doing now but even bigger!

Avicii Presents Strictly Miami is out now on Strictly Rhythm.
