This time last year, I picked Sam Smith as one of Gutter’s “One To Watch 2013”, predicting he would go on to define the 12 months that followed, and I wasn’t wrong. At that time, there was only a few scraps of information about the vocalist who featured on Disclosure’s “Latch”, which went on to become one of the stand-out tracks of last year. A year on and a lot has changed; Sam has slowly but surely made his way to the front of the queue of the most successful artists of the last 12 months. His debut album, “In The Lonely World” is scheduled to released in May.

2013 saw Sam Smith win a MOBO, be named The Brit Awards “Critics Choice” and sell-out tour dates in the UK and further afield in both the US and Europe. 2014 started with a bang for Sam when he was announced as the winner of BBC’s Sound Of 2014.

How has all this happened in just one short year?

Sam’s guest-spot on Disclosure’s track certainly helped, followed by his involvement on Naughty Boy’s number one hit, “La La La”, ensuring Sam’s sublime vocal was heard more then ever. While this was all going on, Sam was grafting his craft behind the scenes writing and recording, as well as festival stints and a live MOBO TV performance alongside Naughty Boy.

Sam later uploaded an acoustic video of his raw, heart-breaking ballad, “Lay Me Down”, which reached over 1.7 million views, pushing Sam Smith to a further audience. His EP, “Nirvana” followed at the end of 2013, paving the way and setting the tone for his forthcoming album. “Money On My Mind”, the track that helped secure The Brits “Critics Choice” title for Sam will be the lead single for his debut effort. Signed to Capitol Records, Sam’s debut album will be packed with raw, personal, emotive songs, perfectly performed in Sam’s versatile, mesmeric vocal, which is certain to introduce him to music lovers all over the globe.
