Glasgow is undoubtedly the place to be for gig-goers this year; anyone who is anyone is lining up gigs in the city in 2014.    Here at Gutter HQ, we couldn’t help but notice that recent gig announcements have a somewhat “retro vibe” . . .

It seems that what was acceptable in the 80s is still in demand for the 00s; Pet Shop Boys, Culture Club and Erasure are just some of the 80s icons with forthcoming gigs in Glasgow later this year. Take a step back into a decade of leg warmers, questionable hair and catchy choruses with our “Retro Glasgow” Playlist which will not only get you in the mood, but maybe even help you decide which gig to go to!

Culture Club “Karma Chameleon”

How can you not love this?! The perfect singalong chorus that is set to have The Hydro in full voice this December.    Culture Club have announced plans to kick off their forthcoming tour at Glasgow’s newest gig venue alongside Alison Moyet; their first tour in 25 years (!!!)

Frankie Goes To Hollywood “Two Tribes”

Remembered for their controversial single, “Relax”, Frankie Goes To Hollywood also had a massive hit single with this dancefloor-friendly track back in 1983. Lead vocalist, Holly Johnson will play Glasgow’s 02 ABC on 21st October 2014 as part of his debut solo UK tour, “Unleashed From The Pleasuredome”.

Pet Shop Boys “Always On My Mind”

The most successful synth-pop duo ever will play Glasgow’s Clyde Auditorium in September as part of their “Electric” Tour. Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe released their studio album (of the same name) in July of last year. Their version of “Always On My Mind” was Christmas Number One in the UK in 1987.

Erasure “Stop!”

From one 80s synth-pop duo to another, Andy Bell and Vince Clarke topped the charts in the 1980s with hits including, “Sometimes” and “A Little Respect”, hits they’ll undoubtedly be bringing to Glasgow when they play 02 Academy on Friday 21st November 2014. “Stop!” was taken from their 1988 Christmas EP, “Crackers International”.

Yazoo “Only You”

Yazoo may not have immediate plans to reform and tour but both Alison Moyet and Vince Clarke are scheduled to play shows in Glasgow this year. Clarke is now one half of Erasure and will play in Glasgow in November, as mentioned. Moyet is lined up to support Culture Club at The Hydro in December and will play a solo show in August in Glasgow as part of Magner’s Summer Nights. “Only You” is taken from the duo’s debut album, “Upstairs At Eric’s” and was released in 1982.
